Albemarle Road Passive House Apartment

This 83 unit, 6 story brick co-op building in Brooklyn was built in 1938. Henson renovated a corner apartment to Passive House standards to serve as a model for future renovations in the building. The project demonstrated that the benefits of Passive House including fresh air, energy savings, soundproofing, and a durable enclosure can be realized even on a unit-by-unit scale. The apartment was air-sealed and insulated, and triple glazed tilt and turn windows were installed. A unique HVAC system provided heating, cooling, and energy recovery ventilation with no outdoor unit and just two small penetrations on the outside wall.
