Scott Henson Architect Names Jane Sanders as Director of Sustainability

“Designing and living in a Passive House was a transformative experience for me,” says Jane Sanders, new Senior Associate and Director of Sustainability at Scott Henson Architect (SHA). “I was able to prove that beyond the energy savings, designing for sustainability can transform urban living. I live on a busy block in Brooklyn and the quiet, filtered fresh air, and consistent temperatures are the most noticeable benefits. At SHA I have the opportunity to impact NYC on a larger scale by designing deep energy retrofits for historic buildings.”

The new Climate Mobilization Act and its impact on existing buildings will be a primary focus for Jane in her new position at SHA. “We improve a building’s efficiency and comfort by tightening the envelope, ensuring good ventilation, selecting the right windows. With good long-term planning, it will prove more cost effective in the long run.”

Jane has extensive experience in building restoration, new construction, code compliance and working with NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission. Prior to joining SHA, Jane was Principal of her own firm for fifteen years after gaining twelve years of historic preservation experience at Jan Hird Pokorny Associates. Her multi-faceted experience includes working on a variety of building types including residential towers, churches, museums, and townhouses. She has a strong design background and is an expert in preparing construction documents, technical specifications, master plans, historic structure reports and conditions surveys.

Jane was recently selected by the Department of Buildings to serve as a member of the 2019 NYCECC Residential Advisory Committee to review and provide recommendations on proposed amendments to the energy code.
Jane has completed training and certification in Passive House, a methodology for producing extremely energy efficient buildings with superior indoor air quality. She has completed three Passive House projects in Brooklyn.
